Our Story

THE BREAD THAT INSPIRED A MOVEMENT

The Baker & The Cakemaker began as a small family bakery in Grass Valley, California with just a small team, a clear vision of what bread should be and a deep commitment to crafting the most nutrient-dense sourdough possible. The number of loaves baked began to grow. Slowly. By hand and with care. Using only organic flour, water, salt, and time.

We never set out to “start a movement.” But our loaves changed all that.

What happened next wasn’t planned. Customers started lining up before we opened at farmers markets. We would sell out early. People told their friends. Families spent extra time driving just to get their favorite loaf. Suddenly, it wasn’t just “good bread.” It became a movement against preservatives. Against bleached, nutrient-stripped flour. Against bread that’s engineered to last months instead of nourishing human beings. From this came a community and a following.

Our bread reminded people of what bread is supposed to be. It invited people back to real food and gut-friendly fermentation, back to supporting artisan methods vs. industrial processing, and back to the tradition of breaking bread with family and friends.

This wasn’t marketing. It was the bread itself: our crunchy crust and soft, tangy insides, the simplicity of our preservative-free ingredients and slow fermentation.

Word spread. Then came our awards; dozens of local and finally second place in the world in an international sourdough competition. No doubt our bread is special.

Today, we honor that devotion by making our sourdough available to anyone, anywhere in the United States. Each loaf is baked fresh, cooled, and frozen the same day, preserving the flavor, texture, and aroma that made people fall in love with it in the first place.
